    Rare Bertin Lamp

The object shown here is a docimastic lamp (or “fire fountain”), invented by Théodore-Pierre Bertin in the late 18th century (patent filed in 1799).

    Key Features

Function: Designed for docimastics (the art of testing ores), metal welding, and glassworking by producing a powerful jet of flame using steam and oil.

Materials: Typically made of patinated bronze and brass.

Design: It often rests on an eagle-claw-shaped base, topped by a reservoir shaped like an antique lamp and a small spherical boiler (aeolipyle) connected to a neck shaped like an eagle’s head. In good condition; the wick cover is missing, though the wick is still present; the sphere has a very slight dent.

Many pieces from this period—even those of high quality—bear no markings or signatures; in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, bronze artisans and manufacturers of scientific instruments did not systematically sign their works, especially when they were produced according to a public patent such as Bertin’s.
The fact that it bears no mark in no way diminishes its value: on this type of object, it is the quality of the bronze casting (the fineness of the details on the bird’s foot) and the authenticity of the patina that attest to its era. It is a magnificent example of the union between artistic craftsmanship and the dawn of modern science during the First Empire.
