Particularly remarkable is this magnificent Louis XVI period desk armchair with swivel seat in molded, carved and gilded wood, stamped by the highly esteemed Maitre ébéniste, Sulpice Brizard (1735-1798).
The enveloping backrest is carved at the top with a duet of roses, one open, the other closed, revealing Sulpice Brizard's talent as a carver.
The belt, carved with flowers, foliage and rosettes, rests on tapered, fluted and filleted legs.
Magnificent original gilding in gold leaf, restored by an art gilder.
High-quality leather upholstery.

Museum piece Stamped S. BRIZARD , for Sulpice Brizard, supplier to the Crown, renowned for his finesse, originality and, as Francois de Salverte wrote: "his pleasant fantasy".
Having married Marie-Genevieve Meunier, daughter of master cabinetmaker Étienne Meunier, Sulpice Brizard was admitted to the master's program on February 13, 1762, and established himself on rue de Cléry.
Most of his work is in the Louis XVI style, with beautifully proportioned, finely carved models executed with great refinement. More original features include sofas and bergères with concave front belts, rather than the usual curved ones.

The Mobilier national, the Château de Versailles and the Musée Carnavalet, among others, have several gilded wood works by him from the same period.
Today, these works are rare and highly prized.
