Culture Gan, Burkina Faso
First half of the 20th century
H .: 54; L .: 14 cm
Two-headed bronze serpent with a flat, wavy body and incised with diamonds referring to its scales. The heads feature open mouths, round eye patches, and geometric incised-patterned necks. A suspension ring is arranged between the two heads.
The reverse is left smooth.
The Torfan is a spiritual entity. It manifests itself in a snake which can have, according to its representations, one to ten heads. This divination could only be kept by the healer witch doctor.
Let us add that among the Gan, the role of the blacksmith fulfills this duality of the sorcerer and the diviner. He is the one who masters the fire.
