Rare Russian Orthodox icon, oil on panel covered with solid silver riza* (Moscow hallmark 1792), depicting the scene of Christ's Ascension to heaven, standing in glory, surrounded by two angels; below, the Virgin Mary with folded hands, accompanied by the apostles, from the late 18th century.
This icon is in good condition. Moscow hallmark (St. George slaying the dragon) + syndic hallmark in a heart + date 1792. On the back of the panel, handwritten inscriptions in Cyrillic seem to give details of the various owners of the icon in the 19th century (1st paragraph dated 1845 or 49; second paragraph 1880).
Please note: the oclad is slightly damaged (around the edges), scratched and weathered; take a good look at the photos.
* The "oclades
or metal cover can be carved silver, inlaid with enamel or pearls, and are used for icons that have performed a miracle. There are several types of oclade: the "Basma" covers only the frame of the object. The "Riza" covers the background of the icon, leaving only the body of the figures visible.
