A large white marble and gilded bronze clock with a patina, dating from the Napoleon III period.
An elegant female figure in patinated bronze, draped in the classical style and crowned with flowers, leans against an anchor adorned with gilded bronze ropes. The anchor is a symbol of stability and hope. This allegory of navigation or maritime trade symbolizes prosperity and adventure at sea.
The enameled dial is signed “BAILLY à LYON” with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes. The anchor-escapement movement with striking mechanism bears a stamp on the mainplate: “VICENTI et &. silver medal,” a distinction awarded at the World’s Fair in Paris, where it also won the Gold Medal in 1855.
The base, with rounded and fluted sides, is made of Carrara marble and decorated on the front with foliage motifs and surrounded by a beaded border; it rests on six sculpted feet, also made of gilded bronze.
