Bronze sculpture with brown patina representing "Cupid", after Jean-Baptiste Pigalle.
Cupid is represented as a young child wearing his traditional attributes, the arrows in the quiver in the belt and the wings in the back. It rests on a flower bed.
This bronze is signed "Pigalle" on the base and marked with the date "May 18, 1893".
Jean-Baptiste Pigalle (1714-1785) is a great French sculptor. He studied sculpture at a very young age under the advice of Robert Le Lorrain then Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, then went to Italy in 1734 to perfect his technique. On his return, he will integrate the Fine Arts thanks to his work "Mercure attaching his heel" (1740), which was an immediate success. The reputation of Pigalle swells in the heart of the Parisian aristocracy. Madame de Pompadour took him under her wing at the same time as the orders flowed in. Juggling between the Baroque and the Classical, he painted portraits of Diderot and Voltaire, then produced the famous funeral monuments intended for the Marshal of Saxe (Strasbourg, 1776).
"Cupid" is a harmonious bronze. A poetic work that charms with the details of its realization and its universal symbolism.
