Michael Butterfield, is an Englishman. He worked in France from 1677. He produced for the Royal Academy of Sciences a silver planisphere commissioned by Cassini and supervised the division of meridian circles of more than 4 meters in diameter intended for the globes of Marly. He is considered to be the "father" of this type of horizontal dial, the most characteristic of Parisian production from the end of the 17th century to the middle of the 18th century.
