Virgin of Marseilles or santibelli* in polychrome and gilded terra cotta, representing the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus, standing on a pedestal framed by two cherubs, with her globe, late 19th-early 20th century.
This Virgin is in good condition and of fine quality. It has its globe and interior decorations.
Please note: slight wear to decorations, gilding and polychromy, see photos.
* Santibelli
Santibelli" are statuettes generally around forty centimeters high. Moulded in terracotta, but also in plaster from Italy, they are painted in very bright colors, sometimes sprinkled with glitter, or gilded with gold leaf. The origins of the statuettes' names are hard to pin down: here, we're reminded of a typical Marseilles nickname for the "Santibelli", the benêt de service, the sympathetic and not very quick-witted fool. Here, we imagine that "Santibelli" comes from the cry uttered by Italian salesmen who, according to tradition, peddled these objects: "Santi... Belli...", like a street cry, which in a shorthand would have come to designate these statuettes sold by auction.
