* Limoges enamels:
Painted enamel on copper appeared in Limoges at the end of the 15th century. Enamel is a vitreous substance colored by metallic oxides (tin, cobalt, manganese, antimony, etc.). Copper is the best support for enamels, as its melting point is close to that of glass. The first objects produced were rectangular plates (often combined in triptychs) illustrating religious themes. Artists drew their inspiration from drawings in books of hours. The fashion for grisaille soon followed, with Italian painting serving as a model. Towards the middle of the 16th century, the best enamellers were inspired by the engravings in the books, which were themselves influenced by the art of Fontainebleau. These included Pierre Reymond, Pierre Courteys, Maître IC and others. But it is Léonard Limosin whom art historians place as the figurehead of Limousin enameling at this time (cf patrimoine-histoire website, page dedicated to the Louvre rooms).
